WILLIAM BETTS: Panoramic view of 'The Edge of Recognition'

“Panoramic view of 'The Edge of Recognition'”, 2005

About the Show

William Betts continues his exploration of the potential of painting at the convergence of digital imaging, industrial processes, and the traditional endeavor. These new paintings consists of sampled and deconstructed color information from digital landscape photographs, extruded and painted using the artist's proprietary process resulting in abstract images that retain their organic essence while becoming something entirely new and synthetic.

Betts creates these paintings using a proprietary technology he developed specifically to create these images. The works are executed in acrylic paint using colors mixed specifically for the image. The technology allows for paint to be applied in minute and specific areas as small as 1/64 inch wide accurate to 1/2000 of an inch with each line representing a single extruded pixel. Each painting contains between 800 and 2000 lines of paint applied one color at a time, one line at a time.

William Betts was born and raised in New York City. He attended Arizona State University graduating with Honors in 1991 with a BA in studio art. He currently lives and works in Houston, Texas. Betts had his first solo show in Houston in 2004 that received critical attention and subsequently has exhibited in solo shows in New York City, Boston, as well as group shows in Texas and California, including the 2005 Texas Biennial.
