About the Show

Object + Thought, in association with Plus+gallery, is proud to present "Partitioned 12-18", a solo installation by R. Justin Stewart. Curated by Plus+gallery interns Aniko Vetter and Michelle Soler, "Partitioned 12-18" creates an ethereal experience as the viewer is immersed in an atmosphere full of three-dimensional forms fashioned from painstakingly organized blue thread. Vetter and Soler, inspired instantly by the captivating installations of R. Justin Stewart, worked with the artist to create the ideal situation in which he could utilize the project space towards a site-specific installation. "Partitioned 12-18" creates a jaw-dropping environment qualified to serve as the Stewart’s introduction to Denver.

R. Justin Stewart, an International Sculpture Center 2007 Student achievement in Sculpture Award winner, currently resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he is a candidate for a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. His elaborate mixed media sculptures and installations are a far cry from the clay pots he made in the high school pottery class that started him down the path toward becoming an artist. As a self-proclaimed jock in high school he took the class, taught by his football coach, for no other reason than an easy A. Little did he know that choice would unveil his real talent as an artist. After discovering his love of crafting work from clay he attended the Kansas City Art Institute where he earned his BFA and learned that his passion for creating was not restricted by the boundaries of clay.

While he has experimented with all types of mixed media, Stewart’s current work involves the meticulous installation of blue thread staircases creating awe-inspiring atmospheres full of unexpected three-dimensional forms. Fascinated by the multiple layers that exist within any formation, he explores the creation of multiple unintentional structures from a single intended one. He addresses man’s struggle to understand an increasingly fragmented world through his construction of well organized systems and structures that get lost in their own abyss of multiplicities.

"Partitioned 12-18" is Stewart’s latest creation in this series of work and is based on diagrams formed by the data he generated by recording every instance he entered and exited an architectural structure in a set period of time. The data determines the size, distance and geographic relationships between the platforms of the thread staircases, creating an ephemeral three-dimensional map. As Stewart explains, mapping requires the reduction or exclusion of any information that does not increase the functionality of the map thus giving the viewer a glimpse into only a sliver of his own existence, a fragment of himself as a human being existing in a fragmented world.
